3) What makes you think you're better than me? Does what it says on the tin, really. I think a lot of non-otherkin think that otherkin are making a statement of superiority by claiming otherkin status. Especially on the internet--where you don't know about the person you're speaking with, and it's generally assumed that otherkin are all socially inept hygiene-impaired teenagers--that's a REALLY grating proposition.
Some otherkin maybe believe that otherkin are better than humans (the "boy I hate humans" crowd). But I'm not really interested in humans being better or worse than anything else out there. Humans can be awful sometimes. They can also be really great. I don't have anything like past life memories, but I'm pretty sure that if I did I'd have much the same situation--my race could be pretty awesome sometimes, and pretty horrifying others. I'd be surprised if that weren't true. I accept the fact that nothing's universally benign, good, or friendly as a fact of existence. Pretending that otherkin are always amazing is silly, and very adolescent, I think.
To look at it another way: yes, I embody a great mystery and powerful magic and blah blah blah. So does everyone and everything else in the universe. My kind's just slightly different than most everybody else's.
Labels: argh humans suck, mysticism, why the scorn?
